The Highlands of Scotland have waterfalls like whisky – galore. But the Falls of Caledon are unique – magical imagined waterfalls concealed in the densely wooded forest of Caledon which once covered the virtual entirety of large parts of Scotland. There in the true wilderness creatures such as the wolf and lynx, even bears, would have roamed unchecked by human interference until they were eventually hunted to extinction. The great forest has been diminished over centuries, stripped and grazed by deer and sheep, or substituted with non-native industrial scale and grimly regimented planting of sitka spruce. Returning the land to what it once proudly was – with a thriving native woodlands, flourishing plants and animal life restoring lost eco-systems is a step towards addressing the climate and biodiversity emergency facing not just Scotland but the whole planet.
